1880 Newfoundland One Cent
Victoria · 22 varieties · study revised Nov. 29th 2020
With 400,000 coins minted for this year, it represents the largest single production during the reign of Queen Victoria. Because of this relatively large production, it would seem most likely that several new varieties would eventually appear. At the moment, there are three published variations, but with this new information, there will need to be several more added to this list!

The current varieties include: a very rare Narrow or Oval "0", a somewhat scarce Wide Date with a Low "0", and finally an Even Date. Now, with the inclusion of many new variances, the 1880 Large Cent coinage will take on a surprisingly new, and different look! There will be greater emphasis made for the many Narrow, Medium and Wide Date variations, and in particular, to the Re-engraved Letters and Re-punched Numbers that are associated with this date. Because of the extensive number of altered characters, which are present in this series, only the most relevant of them will be used in these descriptions. Also, it should be noted that some of these coins exhibit modest signs of "Die Rotations". Surprisingly, the occurrence of this feature is quite common with the Wide Date varieties, however, it is not nearly as prominent within either the Narrow or Medium Date variations. The addition of these new varieties, will dramatically increase the total number of variances that now have been identified. This will certainly make the collecting of this date much more interesting, and challenging!
Finally, with the exception of the TYPE IV varieties, which were minted with a Narrow or Oval "0", all of the other variations listed in this section, have been punched with a Wide, Round "0".
