Wide Date, Low, Upright "0", Re-Engraved "F"
1880 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The next example of these known Wide Date varieties, appears to be very similar to the more Conventional TYPE III (f1) variety, however, there are a few notable differences. In this instance, the "0" takes on a more Upright stance than the previously mentioned variety, with its markedly Tilted numeral. Also, in this case, the date is slightly Wider than any of these other recognized Low "0" variations. Furthermore, the Reverse side Lettering, displays many Modified characters which are quite prominent and should be most helpful with the identification of this specific variation. In particular, each of the "E's", in the words "ONE" and "CENT" respectively, illustrate obvious signs of having been Altered. However, the "F", in "NEWF", has also been Re-engraved and the effect is quite noticeable, with the original character still clearly visible below its Lower arm. There are at least two other varieties which also display this Re-engraved "F", but each has its own individual characteristics. In this respect, this modified Letter can be considered as a defining feature!
