Medium Date, Low "0", Narrow Gap "88" & Re-Engraved "E's" (1st & 3rd)
1880 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This listing is the fifth example in this group of Medium Date variations, and it is also the third of these varieties to have a Low "0" in the Date. In some respects, it looks very similar to the second Medium Date variation, but there are some significant differences. Perhaps the most important of these can be seen with the spacing between the last three digits. In this particular instance, the Gap between the "88" is noticeably Narrower, and between the "80", Wider than can be found on any of the other members within this group. Also to be considered, are the Modified "E's" on the Reverse inscription, which might appear to be quite similar to some of the other varieties. In order to avoid any confusion, it would be very beneficial to make a direct comparison with these other, "look-alike", variances. In this case, the "E's", in "ONE" and "NEWF", are somewhat different in appearance to those of the other variations, and the recognition of their individual characteristics will be helpful with the identification of this particular variety.
