1896 Newfoundland One Cent
Victoria · 4 varieties · study revised Jan. 2nd 2018
This was the last year for which Large Cents were issued during the reign of Queen Victoria and it appears to have been one of the few years when there was not an abundance of varieties. Considering that 200,000 coins were minted and with 10 Reverse Dies used, it would seem likely that a larger family of variations might have occurred. However, this does not appear to have been the case! There have been some signs of both Re-engraving and Re-punching to some of the Letters and Numbers but these modifications pale in comparison to some of the other years. In spite of this, there are still a few varieties which can be considered less than spectacular but interesting enough to be highlighted.
