CVI Newfoundland

1947 Newfoundland One Cent

George VI · 3 varieties · study revised Apr. 21th 2018

The 1947 issue was the very last coinage minted for this Newfoundland series. With only 313,772 coins produced, it represents the second lowest mintage for this George VI series (only the 1940 had a lower mintage of 300,000 coins). Presently, there are three distinct variations which can be found for this date and with such a small mintage, the probability of finding others is remote at best! Unlike some of the other years, the 1947 varieties do not appear to have any significant differences to the lengths of their dates, however, there are some noticeable variances within the spacing between the last two numerals. One of these has a Narrow Gap, whereas, the other two have the Wider Gaps between the "4" and "7". Like many of the other years in this series, the Mint Mark "C" plays an important role with the identification of these different varieties. In each case, it can be observed that it has been punched at slightly different locations on these coins.
