Widest Date, Low, (Very Near) "0"
1880 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This example is the last of these known Wide Date variations, and it is the Widest. Perhaps the best way to recognize this particular variety, is to examine the spacing between the "0", and the Ornamental Beads. In this case, the numeral is extremely close to the Beads, leaving it comparable to only a few of the other varieties which also have Low "0's". Furthermore, the two "8's" have been Re-punched, leaving remnants from the original digits, easily seen on both the inside and outside of these numbers. Finally, it should be noted that there are several Letters in the Reverse Legend which display definite signs of Re-engraving. The "E", in "ONE", has been Tilted slightly forward, revealing traces of the Original "E" on the Upper, Left edge of this character.
