1896 Newfoundland 50 Cents
Victoria · 2 varieties · study revised Aug. 13th 2022
Both the 1896 and the 1898 NFLD Half Dollar coins have several similar characteristics in common. Each year has two distinctive varieties, with both a Portrait 1 & 2 effigy of Queen Victoria; the Portrait 1 for each of these years has an Unaltered Small "w" in the word "NEWFOUNDLAND", whereas, the Portrait 2 has a Large Re-engraved "W" and an extraneous cluster of "Dots" between the last "N & D". From this information, it would appear that the Portrait 1 Obverse Die with the Large "W" and the "Dots", was used for both dates! In order to complete this duplication, all that would be needed now is to find an 1896 Fifty Cent coin with the Portrait 1 likeness of Victoria and the Small "w"!
