Medium Date, Low "80", Re-Engraved "E" & "F", Wire Spur
1880 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
Like the previous listing, this third Medium Date variety also has a slightly Lower "80" punched into Its date, but the effect is not nearly as striking as that of the aforementioned example. However, this variation has one notable feature which is unique, and it can be used to make a positive identification of this particular variety! Just below the Letters "L" and "A", in “NEWFOUNDLAND”, there is a very noticeable and extraneous Spur protruding downward from the Wire Border and along the Top of several Denticles (5). It is very easy to view under low magnification and its presence is unmistakable. This variety also illustrates some moderate signs of Re-engraving, but the Letters "E", in "ONE", and "E" & "F", in "NEWF", are really quite noticeable. The "F" is particularly interesting because it is the only Modified example of this Letter, which can be found within these Medium Date variations. In this instance, the original character can be clearly seen along its Back and beneath the Upper arm of the "F".
