CVI Newfoundland

1945 Newfoundland 5 Cents

George VI · 2 varieties · study revised July 5th 2020

For the longest time, it did not appear as if any major variations would be discovered for this date, however, with a little perseverance, this assumption eventually proved to be incorrect! Finally, a new variety was discovered which now appears to be a major find! Originally, it seemed that all of the coins minted for this date were exactly the same. However, with this new variety, there is now a second and a very recognizable Narrow Date variation, which also has a noticeably Over-punched "45"! To date, out of a sampling of more than 3,900 coins, which have already been examined, only a very small number (32) were found belonging to this unusual variety! These numbers would strongly suggest that there were fewer than two thousand coins originally minted of this new and fascinating variation! To put it into perspective, there were likely fewer of these coins minted than those from the 1946 Five Cent issue! It is certainly a major discovery and will be a real challenge for collectors to find examples of this variety, before they disappear from the general pool of NFLD coins.
