Wide Date, Low, Tilted "0" (Conventional), Re-Eng. "E" & "L" & Small Wire Border Spur under the "F" & "O"
1880 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
Perhaps this is the most recognizable of these Wide Date, Low "0" varieties. In this particular instance, it is the traditional favourite which can be found in any catalogue of Canadian coins. The primary characteristic which makes this variety relatively easy to recognize, is its seemingly "Hanging 0", which appears to have fallen off the end of the date! This can be attributed to the relative position of the "0", with respect to the preceding "8", which is nearly Even with the first two numerals in the date. In addition, it has been Tilted slightly to the Right of its Vertical axis, and like the previous example, it is very close to the Ornamental. Beads. As well, this variation also exhibits traces of Re-engraving to many of its Letters, with the "E", “W” & "F", in “NEWFOUNDLAND being of particular interest, and there is a fine Wire Border Spur located beneath the Letters "F" and "O". Finally, both of the "8's" show some signs of having been Altered, but these effects are not nearly as noticeable as those found on some of the other family members from this year.
