CVI Newfoundland

1943 Newfoundland One Cent

George VI · 2 varieties · study revised Apr. 21st 2018

There are at least three notable varieties for this year, with the first two having Narrow Gaps between the "4" and "3" and the third variation having a Wider Gap. In addition, two of these varieties display traces of Repunching to their numerals. The Second of the Narrow "43" variances, shows some traces of Repunching to the "1", whereas, with the Wide "43" variety, the "4" illustrates definite signs of having been modified. Finally, the Mint Mark "C" also plays an important role in defining these variations. Because of the different locations at which it may be found on these coins, it can be a very useful characteristic for the identification of a specific variety!

The varieties

TYPE I

TYPE II

*TYPE I (b) - Narrow "43", Near, Low "C"

Initially, the second of these Narrow "43" varieties appears to be very similar to the previous example, however, in this case, there is a slight difference in the location of the Mint Mark. Here the "c" has been punched slightly Closer to the base of the Letter "T" and Nearer to the Denticles. (Note: It appears that all of the coins for this variety, have been struck from a die which has left rough and uneven surfaces on the Reverse side.)
