Wide Date, Re-Engraved Reverse, (Wide Shadows)

Unlike the previous example, this is the first of many Sub-varieties which illustrate extensive alterations made to both the Letters and Numbers on the Reverse side. Also, it appears that all of the coins which make up this group, have been struck with Wide Dates. This particular variety displays extensive alterations to many of the Letters and all the numerals, which appear with Wide Shadows left from the remnants of the original digits. The other varieties also illustrate Re-engraved lettering but those modifications often appear as either "different" or less dramatic than these! This in itself can be quite helpful in the process of identifying a particular variety! As stated earlier, many of the Letters have been modified, however, the first "N" and the "L", "A", "N" and "D", (in "NEWFOUNDLAND"), along with the "O" and "E" (in "ONE") and the "C", "E" and "T" (in "CENT"), are the most noteworthy!
