Wide Date, Re-Engraved Reverse, Doubled "O" (in ONE)
1940 Newfoundland One Cent · George VI
The second of these Modified varieties is very similar to the previous example, however, there are some notable differences which make this variation unique to this group. The most important and identifiable characteristic can be found in the word "ONE", where the "O" has been extensively "Doubled". All of the other varieties, illustrate definite signs of Re-engraving within the eye of this letter but unlike this particular example, the exterior of the "O" displays no significant vestiges of these same modifications. In addition, many of the other letters demonstrate traces of these alterations but interestingly enough, fewer of them appear to have been affected by these changes! In this case, the modifications can be found on the first "N" as well as the "A" and "N" (in "NEWFOUNDLAND"), the "O" and "E" (in "ONE") and the "C" and "E" (in "CENT").
