Wide Date, Re-punched "8" & "9"
1896 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This is the second known Wide Date variety which is a little more interesting, with it having two notable Re-punched Numerals in the Date. In this case, both the "8" and "9" have been modified with traces of the Original Digits still clearly visible around the outside edges of the "8" but with the "9", these remnants can be seen on the inside of the Eye and also around the end of its Tail. In addition, there are some subtle signs of Re-engraving to the Reverse side Lettering, with the "E" (in both the words "ONE" and "CENT") and with the "W", "F" and the final "N" (in the word “NEWFOUNDLAND”).
