Medium Date, Wide, Low "76", "F" over "E", Wire Spur
1876 H Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This is the first example of a rather large group of Medium Date varieties, which generally illustrate a Wider Gap found between the "7" and "6" in the date. Both of the Letter "E's", found in the word group, "ONE CENT", show significant signs of having been Altered. The first of these appears to have been formed from an "E" punched over an "F", whereas, the second "E" seems to have been created in the opposite way, with an "F" struck over an "E"! In any case, this difference is noteworthy and helpful for the identification of this variation. In addition, there is a very Tiny (but significant) Wire Spur, which is located adjacent to the Lower Flower located on the Left side of the Reverse. In this example, the Mint Mark "H" has been punched slightly farther to the Left than that of the first example, which places it about one quarter over the Left Leg of the "N".
