Narrow Date, Narrow, Low "76", Re-Engraved* "E's"
1876 H Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The first of these varieties is a Narrow Date, which is relatively easy to recognize by the location of the "6" under the Decorative Bar. In this instance, it is the only example where the "6" is totally covered by this Ornamental device. Both the "7" and "6" have been punched Lower in the date, and the Gap between these two digits is one of the Narrowest found within this family of variations (the other is the 2nd Medium Date variety). All of the Letter "E's" found on the Reverse side of this variety, have been extensively modified, and two of these appear to be rather unusual. In the words, "ONE" and "CENT", the "E's" have been altered in a similar fashion, with a weakly struck base, loosely attached to the main body of each letter. At the bottom of the vertical portion of these "E's", there are two Notches, which would seem to suggest that they had been Over-punched with the Letter "F"! The third Altered "E" can be found in the word, "NEWFOUNDLAND", which in this case, displays the remnants from the Original Letter along its Back. Finally, the Mint Mark "H" for this particular variety has been punched farther to the Right than most of those belonging to this family of variations. In this instance, about a third of the "H" covers the Left Leg of the 2nd "N".
