Narrow Date, Re-Engraved Obverse Lettering, Re-punched "8", Multi-Punched "6", Low "5", Romanesque "W" & Re-Engraved "F"
1865 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This second Narrow Date listing is particularly interesting because of its extensively Re-engraved Obverse Lettering. It is not unusual to find some Victoria Large Cents with a few minor modifications to these Letters, but it is quite rare to find these coins with such extensive changes made to this Obverse Legend! Also, to be considered while examining these coins, is the noticeable Re-punching of both the "8" and "6" in the Date, as well as the Low positioning of the "5". In this case, the remnants from the Original "8" are clearly visible inside the eyes of this digit (particularly on the Right Side), and the "6" appears to have been Punched several times with a Flat Top, Pointed Tail "6". Finally, a Romanesque style "W" has been used and the Letter "F", in "NEWFOUNDLAND", has been Re-engraved with traces of the Original still visible under the upper arm and at the bottom of this Letter.
