Narrow Date, Off-Centre, Short "6" Over Tall "6", Low "5", Notched "E" & Romanesque "W"
1865 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This particular example is, perhaps, the most easily recognizable variation to be found within this family of coins. It is one of three known Narrow Date varieties, all of which appear to be very difficult to find in any condition! This particular variation, illustrates a Re-engraved Letter "E", which is so unique, that it has become the defining feature of this variance! Like all of the other varieties listed in this section, the Original "6" has been Re-punched. In this instance, it had been modified with a Shorter "6" which was rotated slightly to its Left, giving this new character an Off-Centered appearance. This has had a noticeable effect on the more worn coins, where the two sixes have merged together producing what appears to be a Flat Top Tail on this modified numeral. Also, like many of the other varieties, the "5" has been positioned a little Lower in the date. Finally, the Letter "E", in "NEWFOUNDLAND", has been Re-Engraved leaving a well defined Notch at the Top of this character. It occurs just in front of the vertical section which joins to the Upper branch of the "E". This is a specific feature which is unique, only to this variety! In addition, many other Letters illustrate definite signs of Re-engraving, with the "O", in ONE, and the "C", in CENT, being of particular interest. Also, the Letter "W" is in the Romanesque style.
