Wide Date, Low “5”, Re-Eng. “F”, Romanesque “W”
1865 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This variation is the newest addition to this 1865 family, and at first glance it appears to be very similar to many of the other Wide Date varieties. However, it can be readily recognized by its extensively Re-engraved “F” which is unique in comparison to all of the other 1865 variations. It is quite true that several of the other variances also show some very modest signs of Re-graving to the original “F”, but this particular example contrasts significantly to all of these others! In addition, the “5” has been punched noticeably lower than the other digits of the date. This example also displays a Romanesque “W”.
