(2nd) Widest Date, Re-Eng. “O”, Gothic “W” (Unmodified)
1865 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This variety could be quite easily mistaken for the Widest Date variance, “TYPE I (e)”, because both have very Wide Dates and each has a Gothic “W”. However, under closer examination, it can be determined that this date is not quite as Wide, and the Gothic “W” shows no significant signs of any Alterations. This particular “W” has asymmetrical “V’s” with the Right side being noticeably deeper than the Left! It is the only variety which illustrates this particular characteristic! In addition, this variation displays a significant modification to the “O”, in “ONE”, which is not a feature found on the TYPE I (e) variance!
