Wide Date, Re-punched "6", Low "5", Notched "E", Fine Wire Spur, Obverse "Die Crack" & Romanesque "W"
1865 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The final listing in this Wide Date section, displays some modest signs of Re-engraving to the Letter "E" in "ONE" and also, to the "E", in "CENT". However, the second of these is the more interesting, since the vertical section of this Letter has been extended slightly Higher than the Upper Arm, leaving it with a "Notched" or "Uneven" appearance. Like so many of the other variations, this example also has a Re-punched "8" and "6", with a Low "5, but the overall effect is too subtle to be useful for the determination of this variety! Nevertheless, it still has two other notable characteristics which will be helpful with the recognition of this variance. On the Obverse, there is a short but noticeable Die Break which can be easily seen at the top of the Letter "A", in "VICTORIA". To date, this specific feature has been noted on all of the examples which have been examined, but with such a small sampling, there can be no guarantee that it will be found on every coin from this die! The other feature is a Fine Wire Spur, which can be located on the Reverse side, under the 1st "N", in "NEWFOUNDLAND", and it extends over to the Bottom Oak Leaf in the Wreath. This characteristic can be quite useful with the identification of this variance, however, it is quite faint and will have to be carefully examined in order to verify its presence. Finally, it should be noted that this particular variety has been struck with a Romanesque style of W", in "NEWFOUNDLAND".
