Wide Date, Re-punched, Short "6" / Tall "6", Even "5", Wire Spur, Re-Engraved "O", Gothic "W" & Obverse "V" Over "A"
1865 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This particular variety is relatively new to this family of variations, and it is the first example from this date to be found with a noticeable and extraneous Spur coming from the Wire Border. It can be easily seen running Upward from the Border, just below the second "N" in the word "NEWFOUNDLAND". In addition, this example has a Re-punched "8", with a very noticeably Modified Short "6" Over a Tall "6", and an Even "5". Once again, some of the individual Letters found on the Reverse Legend can be quite useful with the identification of this variety. The "O", in "ONE", has been Altered, but the changes have left the Right Side of this character Narrower, leaving traces from the Original letter clearly visible. There are still other Letters which show some subtle signs of changes, but it is the Re-engraved Gothic "W" which has the most eye-catching appearance! Finally, this variety has an interesting Obverse feature which appears as an Inverted "V" Over the "A", in "VICTORIA"! In this case, it is a very prominent characteristic which can also be found on several of these other varieties as well.
