Wide Date, Short "6" / Tall "6", Low "5". Re-Engraved "O" & Romanesque "W"
1865 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
Like the previously listed example, this variety can also be characterized by the Re-punching of the Numeral "6". In this instance, the Original "6" has been Over-struck with a Shorter Digit, which was also rotated slightly Off-Centre, to its Left. This has effectively left the remnants from the primary digit exposed on the inside of the Eye, and at the Top, Right side of its Tail. However, unlike the aforementioned variation, the numeral "5" has been positioned slightly Lower in the date.
Another feature which is quite prominent, is the Re-engraving of all three Letters in the Word "ONE", which also helps to characterize this variety. Each Letter is interesting in its own way, but the "O" is particularly noteworthy. In this instance, the Alteration made to the Right Side of this Letter is considerably Narrower than that of the Original character. As a result, remnants from the Primary "O" are still clearly visible on either side of this modification. At the moment, this feature is only common to this and the TYPE I (f) variety. Once again, Letter "W" has been struck in the asymmetrical, Romanesque style.
