Wide Date, Multi-Punched "6", Even "5", Small, Diamond-Shaped Eyes in "8", & Romanesque "W"
1865 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This variety is a little unusual because it appears that the "6" has been Re-punched more than once! If the example has not been too badly worn, traces of these previously struck digits can be seen on either side of the Tail to this Modified "6". Also, the "8" has been Re-punched, and as these coins wear, the Eyes of the "8" become smaller and appear somewhat Diamond shaped! However, while observing this feature, some caution must be used, because many minor variances may occur amongst the different examples. Also, the Reverse Side Lettering displays some modest signs of Re-engraving, but only the Letter "E", in "ONE", can be considered significant. The Letter "W", in this case, has been designed in an asymmetrical "Romanesque" Style. Finally, another helpful characteristic which can be found quite often under the "8", is a single Bead that appears to have been weakly struck and poorly formed! It is a useful feature, however, it is not found on every example of this variety.
