Narrow Date, Double "Dot" Obverse & Reverse, Even "2"
1872 H Newfoundland 10 Cents · Victoria
The second example of these varieties has a Narrow Date and a very unusual and seemingly unexplainable feature which could make it exceptionally interesting to collectors. There are two small "Dots" that appear to resemble a tiny colon (on its side), which is located between the letter "G" (in the abbreviation REG :) and the standard colon which follows it. Perhaps, this could be the result of imperfections in the die but this is not known for certain. In any event, it is a thoroughly interesting characteristic!
Note: Originally, when I wrote this description prior to the release of this book in 2015, I had
some doubts as to the cause of these 2 Dots on the Obverse of these coins. My
initial reaction was that these might have been the unauthorized signature of some
engraver, but I admit that this was a stretch for an explanation! However, in late
June 2020, I discovered that the Reverse side also had 2 similar Dots, sitting above
the small ornamental loop, just to the right of the “S” in “CENTS”!
Now my thinking is that one set might have been an error, but double “Dots” in
approximately the same location, on either side of the coin, is no accident!
