Wide Date, Low "4", Far, Tilted "7"
1947 Newfoundland 5 Cents · George VI
The first of the Wide Date varieties appears to be the most common of this 1947 mintage and it can be easily recognized by the uneven appearance of the date. In this instance, the "4" has been punched lower than the "7", which is tilted slightly upward to its left. Also, the base of the "7" is positioned almost evenly with the front face of the decorative loop, located directly below it. In addition, the "7" has been over-punched leaving the original digit clearly visible at the bottom of this numeral. With both of these Wide Date varieties, the gap between the "4" and "7" is minimally wider than it is for the Narrow Date.
