Narrow Date, Re-punched "45"
1945 Newfoundland 5 Cents · George VI
The second of these varieties, is an extremely rare Narrow Date variation which also has a noticeably Re-punched "45"! Again, looking at the positioning of the letter "T", it can be clearly seen to be resting over the Back end of the Numeral "5". In addition, the last three numbers in the date are separated by very Narrow Gaps.
Note: An interesting observation of this Narrow Date variety is that the Reverse side of these coins all appear to have a very rough and uneven surface (very much like
the skin of an orange). Also, at least one of these examples has a noticeable
"Die Break" running through the "O" (in "NEWFOUNDLAND"), and a fainter second break appears just ahead of the "Dot", on the same side of the coin. Is it possible
that one or both of these characteristics were signs that the Reverse Die was
beginning to disintegrate?
This might be the most probable explanation as to why so few of these coins are found.
(+) A note to indicate the First known and recorded example to be discovered. It is specifically: TYPE II (x-6) in these photo listings.
