Narrow Date, Far, Right "H". Plain "N"
1872 H Newfoundland 50 Cents · Victoria
The first variety can be identified by the positioning of the Mint Mark "H" on the Obverse. In this situation, it has been punched slightly Farther from the base of the Queen's bust and a little more to the Right, above the second "N", in the word "NEWFOUNDLAND". On the Reverse, the "2" is slightly Closer to the "7", making it the "Narrow" Date. At first glance, this difference is difficult to see but by comparing the relative position of the "2" with the Letter "T", directly above in the word CENTS, it appears to be slightly Farther to the Left of the base of the "T" than it is with its companion. Also, it should be noted that the Letter "N" for this variety appears as a Plain character Without any significant signs of Re-engraving.
