Narrow Date, Low-Right "H", Low "72", Re-Engraved "F", Wire Border Spur & Die Clash
1872 H Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This next Narrow Date variety has several interesting features which combine to make up its overall character. Perhaps the easiest way to recognize this variance is to check for an Extraneous "Spur" which is located above the Wire Border, between the letters "L" and "A", in "NEWFOUNDLAND". It appears to be a characteristic which is unique to this particular variation! In addition, the Reverse side illustrates some moderate signs of a "Die Clash" which can be seen on either side of the Crown and as lines on the upper part of the Reverse. Also, the Re-engraved Lettering should be considered when looking for identifying features. In this instance, the Letter "F" has been noticeably Altered, with the remnants from the original character still clearly visible beneath its short arm, and protruding out in front of it. However, it must be emphasized that there are still other variations which also display traces of Modifications made to this letter. Finally, this variety will be the third example from this Narrow Date family which can be found to have a Low "72" in the Date.
