Narrow Date, Right "H", Even "7", Low "2", Re-Engraved Reverse
1872 H Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The second of these Narrow Date varieties is defined mainly by the extensively Re-engraved Lettering found on the Reverse side. Most of the individual Letters illustrate some degree of these modifications but there are few which have been extensively Altered. This select group of Letters consists of the "C" & "N", in "CENT", and also, the "N", "E", "W", "F" & "A", in "NEWFOUNDLAND". In addition, mention should be made of the Obverse Lettering which also displays some subtle signs of Re-engraving, however, it is a characteristic which is commonly found, in varying degrees, on all of these varieties! In addition, the positioning of the final two numerals should also be noted because of their importance to the recognition of this variety. Unlike the the first of these Narrow Date variations, which has a Low "72", the "7" in this case has been punched Evenly with the "18", whereas, the "2" is located considerably Lower.
