Narrow Date, Right "H", Low "72" & Wire Border Overlap
1872 H Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
All of these Narrow Date varieties have one thing in common which makes the identification of this group relatively easy. The "2" in the Date is completely covered by the Ornamental Bar located directly above it. This is unlike the Medium and Wide Date variations, where the "2" has been punched outside of the area covered by this feature. The first of these Narrow Date variances has a very Low "72", which is a characteristic that it shares with some of its closest family members. However, in order to make a positive identification of this particular variety, it will be necessary to look for some other notable characteristics which will be helpful in this respect. The Wire Border, that is located just inside of the Denticles, has a couple of features which are unique to this particular variety. The first of these can be found on the Left Side, just below the "O", in "ONE", where there is a small section of the Border which Overlaps itself. Also, at the bottom of the coin, this Wire Border moves away from the denticles and nearly touches the Letter "D", in "NEWFOUNDLAND". Finally, the Victoria Large Cents generally can be described as being a treasure trove of Re-punched and Re-engraved Numerals and Letters. This variety does display many modified characters, but the Letter "C", in "CENT", is the most noteworthy.
