Portrait 1, Wide Date, Re-Engraved "18 & Large "96"
1896 Newfoundland 20 Cents · Victoria
The Large "96" variety is quite easy to recognize because of these two numerals which are both larger and more impressive than those found on the other variations! They are also slightly larger than the preceding numerals in the date, and the gap between the "9" and "6" is noticeably smaller than that those of the other two listed varieties. In addition, the "6" is located very close to the Ornamental of beads, making this a Wide Date and both the "1" and "8", display some significant signs of having been Modified. The other varieties also illustrate some traces of Repunching to these same Numerals. but these effects are not nearly as eye-catching! All of the examples that were examimned, having the Portrait 1 Obverse, also, had the Large "96" Reverse!
