Portrait 1, "Wide Date". Re-Eng. "8 & S"
1894 Newfoundland 20 Cents · Victoria
This is the first of the two Portrait 1 Varieties which can easily be recognized by the wider gap which exists between the "8" and "9" in the date. In addition, it should be noted that there has been extensive changes made to many of the letters and numerals on the Reverse Side legend. At first glance, the size of the gap between the "8" and "9" might not seem to be particularly significant but in direct comparison to the second variety, this difference is quite noticeable. It is definitely true when comparing the relative position of these two numerals beneath the letters "N" and "T" in the word "CENTS". As with the following "Narrow Date" variety, both the "S" and the "8" have been modified but here the similarity ends. The "9" does not appear to have been altered on any of the these coins, whereas, it has definitely been modified on the second Portrait 1 variation.
