Wide Date, Far "0", Re-Engraved "C"
1890 Newfoundland 20 Cents · Victoria
Perhaps the first of these Wide Date varieties, is one of the easiest to recognize. In this particular instance, the date plays an important part with the indentification of this variety, which can be recognized by the Wider Gap separating its "0" from the "9". Like the previous two variations, the letter "C" also has been modified but the changes here are noticeably different than they are with any of the other varieties. In this case, the serifs of both the original and the modified "C", are evenly lined up on the inside curve of this letter. However, this is not the case with the previous Narrow Date varieties which both show a distinctive notch at the bottom of the serif.
