Narrow Date, Re-Engraved "2" and "C"
1890 Newfoundland 20 Cents · Victoria
Both of the Narrow Date varieties listed in this section, illustrate extensively re-engraved "2's" (of the "20"). This particular variation can be identified as a "2" over a "2", with the original numeral still slightly visible, as a fine line on the inside and on the outside, upper section of this digit. Also, the "C" has been heavily modified and the original, underlying letter can be easily seen at the serif. However, when comparing this particular example to those of the other varieties, it can be observed that each altered Letter illustrates subtle differences between themselves. The Narrow Date varieties are very similar to each other with respect to the spacing between each of the numbers in their dates, but they differ substantially from those of the Wide Date variations. In this particular instance, the "Gap" between the "9" and "0" is noticeably Narrower than it is for any of the Wide Date varieties. Also, the distance between the "0" and the ornamental "Ring of Beads" is Wider but it is not quite as obvious.
