Narrow Date, Repunched "8", Small "8's"
1888 Newfoundland 20 Cents · Victoria
This second variety appears to be one of the most interesting discoveries of this Twenty Cent Series! Not only does it have a Narrow Date, but also the size and style of the last two "8's" contrast considerably from those found on the Wide Date variety. It can be easily identified by its short, fat "8's" which also have characteristically smaller eyes! In addition, the "8's" have beeen positioned closer to each other and they are farther from the Ring of Beads than with its Wide Date companions. Finally, the last "8" has been noticeably over-punched, with the original underlying numeral still clearly visible. Judging from the very few examples of this variety which have now been located, it would seem that the total original mintage, would not likely exceed 8,000 coins!
