Re-Engraved Lettering, Centered "7", Plain "6", Left "H"
1876 H Newfoundland 20 Cents · Victoria
The first of these known varieties is quite easily recognized by its heavily Re-engraved Lettering in the word, "NEWFOUNDLAND". Some of these individual letters are noteworthy because of their unusual changes. The "W", "F" and the second "N" have had serifs added where previously, there were none. Also, many letters, such as the "F", illustrate significant signs of overlapping which are very noticeable, even without magnification. In addition, there are a couple of other areas where differences occur. The "7" has been positioned in a Central location between the "8" and "6" which differs from the following Sub-varitey, but it is the same as the second Major variety. Finally, the Mint Mark "H", has been punched farther to the left, above the first letter "D", (in "NEWFOUNDLAND") than it is with the TYPE II variation.
