Repunched "18" (Truncated Serif on "1"), Large-Knob "6"
1865 Newfoundland 20 Cents · Victoria
This first variety appears to be the more common of these two major variations, however, both are very difficult to locate in higher grades. The distinguishing feature of this variety lies with the Numeral "6", which in this instance, appears to be a thick and heavy-looking digit, that supports a large, flattened knob at its head. This numeral is stylistically different from that of the next example which has an alternate form of "6". There is also a secondary variance within this group, which illustrates some interesting differences to the "1" and "8" in the date. Some of these examples display definite signs of Repunching to these numerals but there is yet another minor variation which appears to have a Re-engraved "1" but the "8" does not show any definitive signs of having been modified. In addition, it can be seen that the "1" belonging to the Repunched variation, has a Truncated Serif (or arm) on its Upper Right side.
