Wide Date, Re-Engraved, Reverse Legend
1940 Newfoundland 10 Cents · George VI
The final listing in this section is also a Wide Date variety which has been extensively Re-engraved, very much like the previous examples. At first, it might appear that it is the same as one of these aforementioned variations, but under closer examination, it can be seen that they are very different. In this particular case, the Re-engraving of the Reverse digits is very crude in appearance and does not demonstrate the same artistic flair that the previous varieties illustrate! Also, it should be noted that there are some very distinct differences between several of these individual Re-engraved Letters. On the first of these Modified varieties, the letter "N" has been noticeably Altered at the top of its Right arm, whereas, on this particular variety, it occurs on the Diagonal of this Letter. In another instance, the Ornamental Loops have both been Modified on the first example but not on this Variety. Similarly, some of the other Letters also show these divergences.
Note: On page 111 of Hans Zoell's 1962 Catalog, he makes reference to a variety which is very similar to the TYPES II (b) & (c) of this current edition, however, it is not exactly the same as any of those listed herein. The differences are very subtle and his example definitely belongs to another group in this growing family of coins. Reference number: R819c - shift entry reverse, except 0.
