Coin #1 in Barry's study

The first of these varieties is very easy to recognize from its noticeably Re-punched "7" and more extensively Re-Engraved "C" and "S" (in the word "CENTS"). The second variety also had these two letters Re-Engraved but the results were not as eye-catching as these. In this instance, the Upper part of the "S", clearly shows evidence of the Original character, directly beneath the Top of this Letter, which had been positioned slightly higher. Its new location has placed it it more Evenly with the other Letters in "CENTS". Finally, it should be mentioned that many of the coins from this variety have been very weakly struck over the "74", which has resulted in the "7" often appearing as a plain digit.
