Medium Date, Re-Engraved "F" & Narrow "89"
1894 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
Initially, the second of these Medium date varieties, appears to be nearly identical to the first example from this intermediate group of variations. However, they are not exactly the same! In this instance, the "4" is evenly centered, and neatly covers the middle bead, whereas, with the first Medium date variance, it has been positioned a little closer to the front of this bead. Also, the letter "F" in the word "NEWFOUNDLAND", has been Re-engraved but unlike the first variety, it is neither notched nor "Dog-Eared"! In addition, the "4" shows some traces of having been Repunched, but this effect is very difficult to observe on some of the more worn examples! In general, this particular variation is more difficult to recognize than some of the others, which share so many of the same Re-engraved Letters, but with subtle differences. Perhaps the only positive method to identify this specific variety is through the process of elimination. This can be best achieved by comparing the Modified Lettering for any significant differences. Also, it is quite similar to the first Medium Date variety with its Narrower Gap between the "8" and "9" . This characteristic can also be useful when making comparisons between these Medium date variations.
