Wide Date, Off-Centre, Repunched "8" & Re-Engraved Letters (e.g., "N's", "E's". "W" & "F")
1890 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The second of these Wide Date varieties has many features which are very similar to its companions, but it also has some differences as well. All have the Wider Gaps between the "9" and "0" and like the previous example, the "0" is slightly Tilted to its left. In addition, the Reverse side illustrates many of the same Re-engraved Letters as the other varieties, however, their effects are more subtle leaving it without the dramatic results that some of the other variations display! Perhaps, the easiest way to identify this particular variety, is to check the Date, which has the Numeral "8" markedly over-punched with what appears to be a slightly Tilted, Off-centre digit. The modifications made to this numeral are so unique that it makes this character a defining feature of this specific variety! The subtlety of the Re-engraved Letters, steal away their uniqueness which would normally make the identification of a particular variation, relatively easy. It does have the Re-engraved "E's" like the Narrow Date but none of these capture your attention. It also has an altered "A" but in this case, it pales in comparison to those of the other Wide Date varieties! Perhaps the sum total of all of these subtle modifications, is a defining feature in itself!
