CVI Newfoundland

TYPE II

"Wide Date", Off-Centre, Repunched "8" (2nd)

1888 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria

TYPE II key detail: Narrow Date, Wide 88
Narrow Date, Wide 88

This last variety is perhaps the most interesting of these three Types. There is a more noticeable difference in the spacing between each of the three "8's". In this case, the separation between these numerals is particularly Wider than either of its two companions. Like its other family members, this variation also has Re-punched "8's", but it is worth noting that the second "8" has been punched noticeably Off-centre, resulting in a Wider gap between the first and second "8". This has effectively left the remnants from the Original digit clearly visible on the Left side of this Modified character.
