Medium Date, Very Wide “76”, Low “6”
1876 H Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This particular example is more of a transitional variation, resting between the Medium and Wide Date varieties. Its most notable characteristic is a very Wide gap between the “7” & “6”, with a Low “6”. It is a very difficult variety to identify and categorize, because it lacks any really defining features. Unlike most of the other variations, listed within this section, this variety definitely requires the “Process of Elimination” in order to reveal its true identity! It does have the usual Re-engraved Letters, but there is nothing unique about them to determine what it is. Basically, its identity can be established by what it doesn’t have. The Mint Mark “H” rests evenly between the Top of the “N” and the Know of the Bow, with most of its Right Leg positioned over the “N” .
