Medium Date, Wide & Low "76", and Re-punched "1" & "7"
1876 H Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The fourth of these Medium Date varieties is perhaps one of the easiest to recognize. In this case, it has several features which will make it relatively easy to identify from the other members of this large family. The most interesting and defining characteristic, which this variety displays, is the evident Re-punching to both the "1" and "7" in the date. It is a unique attribute that only occurs with this specific variety! Also, to be taken into consideration, is the positioning of the "7" and "6", which have been punched Lower in the date, and separated by a Wide Gap. In addition, remnants from the Original "7" can be clearly seen directly above this Altered numeral. Once again, the Reverse side Lettering displays substantial signs of Re-Engraving. The Letter "E", in the word "ONE", illustrates traces of having been Altered along its Lower back and also, the "E", found in "NEWFOUNDLAND", has been very poorly formed, and shows some crude signs of Re-engraving! The Letter "E", in "CENT", has also been modified, however, the effect is somewhat muted in comparison to many of the other varieties. Finally, the Mint Mark "H" is Centered under the Knot in the Wreath, and it just barely clears the Left leg of the "N". In addition, it has been Sharply struck, and is well defined. This is in direct contrast to many of those found on the other varieties, where they have been very Poorly struck, and are often found either partially or completely Filled in!
