Medium Date, Low "73", Low "F", Re-Engraved "A"
1873 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
In this particular instance, this variety exhibits both a lower "7" and "3" in its date but the most important and defining feature of this variation is the Re-engraving of the Letter "A", in the word "NEWFOUNDLAND". Not only has this Letter been Modified but also, it is slightly Off-Centre making it a noticeable signpost for this variety! This characteristic makes it unique to these variations. In addition, it should be mentioned that many of the other letters have also been altered but their effects are not nearly as prominent as it is with this "A"! Also, the Letter "F" is quite interesting because it not only has been Re-engraved, but also, it has been positioned Lower and Closer to the Wire Border than any of the other variations. One interesting feature which often occurs with many of the varieties of the Victoria Large Cent series, is the rather common occurrence of a Broken Wire Border. In this instance, it appears to be true with most, if not all, of the coins minted using these Dies. With some caution, this defect might be useful for recognizing this particular variety. Specifically, there is a short "DASH" which can be found Below and just to the Right of the second "D", in the word "NEWFOUNDLAND". It is a tiny remnant of this flawed Wire Border.
