Narrow Date, Repunched "18", Re-Engraved "E" in (NEWF), Wire Border Spur under the "LA" (LAND)
1873 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The third example from these Narrow Date varieties has several interesting Characteristics which will quickly help to identify it. Under the Letters "LA", in "LAND", there is a rather lengthy Spur positioned beneath the Wire Border at this location. This in itself is a defining characteristic for this particular variation. In addition, this variety illustrates extensive Re-engraving to its Lettering, with the "E", in "NEWF", being a prime example. Also, the "1" & "8" in the date, show definite signs of having been Repunched. Finally, it should mentioned that many of the Letters on the Obverse have been Altered, but these are not as distinctive as those on the Reverse.
