Wide Date, Low-Right, Re-punched "H", Wide "87", Re-Engraved Lettering
1872 H Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The third example of these Wide Date varieties has one of the Widest Dates of any of the variations listed for this year. It also has a Medium Gap found between the "8" and "7", and is surpassed only by the following example, which has a slightly Wider Date. The Wire Border has several breaks along its circumference, which appears to be a Normal characteristics of this variation. At two locations, there are fragments which are quite noticeable and useful for its identification. One of these is located on the Left Side, adjacent to the second Leaf in the wreath, and the other can be found below, and to the Right of the "D", in "NEWFOUNDLAND". In comparison, the other three Wide Date varieties have complete Wire Borders, with only some minor weaknesses. It is a feature which will help to identify this specific variation. Like the previous example, the original Mint Mark "H" has been Over-punched by a Larger “H”, and its Location is Closer to the Top of the Left Leg, of the "N" in "OUND", than it is for any of the other Wide Date variations. Finally, many of the Reverse side Letters have been Re-engraved, with the Letters “N”, "E" and "F" (in “NEWFOUNDLAND” being the most noticeable.
