Medium Date, Very Low-Right "H", Low "72"
1872 H Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The second of these Medium Date varieties is very similar in many respects to the previous example, however, it does exhibit two notable features which set it apart. The Mint Mark "H" has been punched very Low, nearly touching the Top of the Letter "N", in the "OUND". This particular characteristic is only found on this variety, and on the third Wide Date variation. In addition, the "72" has been positioned noticeably Lower than the first two digits in the date, whereas, with the first of these Medium Date variances, the Date has been punched Evenly. Also, there are many Re-engraved Letters in the Reverse Legend, but none of these appear to be very unique or distinctive enough to specifically define this variety. However, they can be used to reinforce it (Eg. "E", in "ONE").
