Wide Date, Tall "6" / Short "6", Even "5", Letters "N", "A" & "N", Close to Wire Border & Re-Engraved Gothic "W"
1865 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This is the first of several Wide Date variations which can be found for this year. In this instance, the "6" has been Over-punched by a numeral having a longer Tail. The result of this has left the new character with remnants from the original "6", being clearly visible around the inside of the Eye, and as a sliver along the left edge of its tail. This Altered character may not appear to be as striking as some of those from the other varieties, but it still has its own particular characteristics. Also, to be considered while identifying this variety, is the positioning of the "5", which in this case, has been punched Evenly with the other numbers in the date. In addition, the Letters, "N", "A" & "N", in "NEWFOUNDLAND", have been positioned very Close to the Wire Border, and the “W” has been Re-punched, giving it a distinct Gothic appearance.
